Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. Matthew 26:14-16
Early on in life, I was just like Judas. As a person caught up in the world, my thoughts were this: if God truly existed, then He would deliver me from all the problems of this world. We sometimes forget about Judas’ walk with Jesus. He apparently believed enough to stop what he was doing and to follow Jesus, but the problem was that Jesus did not offer him the worldly things he wanted.
Life is constantly beating us down, and our response often is, “Where are you, God?” Having a rough childhood, I found comfort in my grandfather. He was the only male role model in my life that lived for God. When he was diagnosed with cancer, he prayed to God to give him six years. God gave him three months. As a result, I quickly handed God over.
When Judas Iscariot did not get what he wanted from Jesus, he did a similar thing. However, Judas felt guilty for betraying Jesus and tried to return the thirty pieces of silver he got from the chief priests as compensation for his betrayal. Why did Judas give back the money? I know. He found out quickly that such worldly things were not going to satisfy him. Five years after my grandfather’s death, God revealed to me that His love for me was more than enough, more than all the world had to offer. I now choose to live life for Him and to pursue His plans and will for my life. You see, God has prepared a place that is worth more than anything on this earth. Keep your focus on Him in the midst of the temptation and destruction around you, and He will deliver you.
Today’s Prayer: Father God, I am sorry for the times in my life I have chosen to pursue earthly things over You. Please give me the strength to remain on the path You have for my life. Thank You for preparing a place for me that is far better than this earth. I am so excited to spend eternity with You. Amen.
