The Last Supper

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Matthew 26:26-29

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”

John 15:5-8

Morning Prayer: Jesus, thank You that on this day so long ago You took special time to eat and drink with Your disciples, to commune with them and to teach them in such a tangible and experiential way about Your purpose and mission to save all of mankind through Your death on the cross. You also comforted these men, even when they did not fully understand what was to come in just one day. You reminded them that You would always be with them as long as they remained in You. Help me to realize how much You long to commune with me today, to offer Yourself to me as living bread and Your blood as atonement for my sins. As I eat and drink today, remind me of Your great act of mercy on the cross and help me sense Your presence with me. Teach me also to remain in You as a branch attached to the true vine so that I might bear fruit for Your glory today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Evening Prayer: Abba, thank You for Your presence with me throughout the day. Whether I feel You in a tangible way or not, I can trust You have been with me and are continuously with me because You declare it in Your Word. I will choose to remain in You even as I lay my head down to sleep this evening. Help me to take time each and every day to eat and drink from You, in a spiritual sense, by spending time with You so that I can bear fruit and show myself as Your disciple. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
