Proverbs 22: Train Up Your Child

Start children off in the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. – Proverbs 22:6

I would not be where I am at today without my parents.

My parents were imperfect and flawed. Yet I am beyond blessed by the fact that they were faithful followers of the Lord. They instilled in my heart from an incredibly young age the wonders of the gospel of grace. For as long as I can remember the mantra of “Love God. Love Others.” was spoken into my life by each of them. They sinned regularly just like you and I, but they faithfully taught me the good news of the gospel.

This proverb is not a mathematical equation. I know of countless families that trained their children in the gospel and yet their children ended up departing from the faith. My heart breaks for these people and these scenarios.

Yet the fact that this isn’t a mathematical formula should not prevent us from raising up children who love the Lord and are familiar with all his ways.

Brother and sister in Christ, let the gospel be the ethos of your home. Speak about the gospel while you sit, while you rise, while you walk along the way, while you eat, while you play board games, while you go on vacation, while you get ready for your day, and at the conclusion of your day. Leverage every moment as a gospel lesson. I’m passionate about this because my parents did it. There were countless lessons about faith that happened in the natural flow of life in our home.

There are countless voices that can derail a child’s future with the Lord. Go to war for your family. Go to war for your children. Intercede for them through prayer every day, and make any moment a gospel moment.

Confess your sins to your family. Your children don’t need to see you as perfect, your children need to see the One who was. Point your children to their Lord Jesus Christ.

Train up your child in the way he should go.

Father God, grant me the grace to lead my family well. Help me to train up my child in the way that they should go. Help me to teach my family the good news of the gospel. Help me to point my family to the One who is worthy of all praise and all trust. In Jesus’ name, amen.
